Sclerotherapy is a rather simple procedure for the treatment of spider veins. Veins are injected with a sclerosing solution which causes them to collapse and fade from view. This may also remedy the bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps.

The sclerosing agent is injected into the affected veins. Approximately one injection is administered for every inch of spider vein - anywhere from five to 40 injections per treatment session. Because the needle is so thin and the sclerosing solution is so mild, pain is usually minimal.

After each sclerotherapy session, the vein will appear lighter. Two or more sessions are usually required to achieve optimal results and these are usually scheduled 4-6 weeks apart.

Some bruising and erythema may develop around the injection area which usually resolves within a month. There may also be some residual brownish pigmentation which may take up to a year to fade.
